The two developers behind Azahar have announced that they’re dropping official support for Anbernic retro handhelds, following the company’s decision to promote its upcoming 3DS-esque dual screen RG DDS using AzaharPlus, an unofficial fork of the 3DS emulator.

I spoke at length with Azahar’s two lead developers, OpenSauce and PabloMK7, some time ago for a separate interview, and looking back through their answers, I realized a few were particularly relevant to what’s happening now. I’ve included some of those comments in this article, alongside a look at what prompted the decision, the differences between Azahar and AzaharPlus, and what it might mean for Anbernic owners.

Again, this is a much, much shorter ‘article’ than my usual work, so it is on my NeoCities page/experiment this time, rather than my usual site :)

unofficial fork? its an unofficial emulator. What does unofficial fork mean? what is an official fork? It’s open source. someone forked it and doing their own thing. It’s also fine for the Azahar to stop supporting the anberric handhelds. That’s how open source works.

An unofficial fork just means it’s a version of Azahar maintained independently of the original development team, rather than by the people behind the official project. It’s still an emulator, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with forking open-source software. That’s one of the benefits of open source! I didn’t mean to indicate that there was anything wrong with that, at all.

The issue isn’t really that AzaharPlus exists, but that Anbernic chose to promote it rather than the original project, despite the Azahar team’s concerns about some of its features and branding. And I agree, the developers are perfectly entitled to decide which hardware they spend their time supporting. That’s largely the point of the article.

    Speaking of Citra.

Does anyone know a place to download “Citra-Nightly-1782.AppImage”?

It is the last version that supports OpenGL 3.3 and the Linux binary won’t run without outdated libraries that are themselves difficult to obtain. But the appimage bundles its dependencies.

This archive.org page has copies of every release except the AppImage. :|

This page links to the AppImage but the link is dead.
